Key Ideas
An ellipse is the set of points whose total distance to two fixed points (the foci) is constant.
The standard forms:
Horizontal major axis: \[ \frac{(x-h)^2}{a^2} + \frac{(y-k)^2}{b^2} = 1 \]
Vertical major axis: \[ \frac{(x-h)^2}{b^2} + \frac{(y-k)^2}{a^2} = 1 \]
Where:
- \((h,k)\) is the center
- \(a\) = semi-major axis (longer)
- \(b\) = semi-minor axis (shorter)
- Relationship: \[ c^2 = a^2 - b^2 \]
- Foci:
- Horizontal: \((h \pm c,\, k)\)
- Vertical: \((h,\, k \pm c)\)

Group terms:
\[ 9(x^2 - 6x) + 4(y^2 + 4y) = -61 \]
Complete the square:
